Belle River Forge is a traditional blacksmith shop owned & operated by artisan-blacksmith Mark Waltzer along the Belle River in Riley, Michigan. The smithy, built in 2017, houses a permanent side-draft coal forge and provides the functional & inspirational environment for implementing a wide variety of projects and restorations.
Artisan-blacksmith Mark Waltzer began the journey to blacksmith as a youth who loved to work with wood using hand-me-down vintage tools. Over the decades, his skills improved, and his vintage woodshop grew. Inspired to make many components, rather than purchase mass-produced hardware, his affection for hand-craftsmanship expanded into the art of blacksmithing, which contrasted with his 42-year career designing precision automotive components. Since his retirement, Mark has been channeling his creativity into hand-crafting unique pieces of functional art that skillfully blend hand-forged iron and reclaimed wood together in harmony.
Mark practices the art of "traditional blacksmithing" using the same tools, techniques, and fuel that have been used for centuries. In doing so, there is always something new to learn, some unique problem to solve, or an age-old secret to unlock. Ancient techniques were rarely documented. They were simply passed-down from generation to generation. Mark has a passion for keeping these skills alive by passing the craft on to his sons and others as a long-standing member of the Michigan Artist Blacksmith Association.
Throughout his career, Mark has worked in eleven countries around the world. During his travels, he's closely examined the timeless work of renaissance artisans throughout Europe and gained first-hand experience blacksmithing in Essex, UK and Bangalore, India. His appreciation for early American ingenuity coupled with the diversity of other cultures, their varied histories and styles, has made an indelible impression that is channeled into his work.
The village blacksmith no longer has a place in today's mass-produced, disposable, import economy. However, the works of local artisans continue to be highly sought by those who appreciate unique hand-crafted heirlooms and are passionate about supporting their local economy. Everything we create is proudly made in Michigan.
Like the blacksmiths of old, Mark offers a wide range of iron work and restorations. Along with his signature items, there's always something new & different in the works. Please visit the Gallery to see a sampling of his craftsmanship.
Success isn't achieved alone. Belle River Forge is blessed to partner with quality local establishments where you can view & purchase a variety of Mark's hand-crafted works.
